Satellite Intercomparison of LWP During VOCALS-REx

Presented here are plots of mean daily LWP (g/m2) from AMSR-E and SSM/I (when available) at 0.25 deg x 0.25 deg resolution. The SSM/I data are also averaged over two satellites (F13 and F15). AMSR-E and SSM/I are compared to CloudSat LWP in which the individual rays that fall into each 0.25 deg x 0.25 deg grid box for ascending and descending passes separately are averaged together and shown at the middle point along the track in the grid box. The profiles with possible precipitation are not removed, as these only make up 3% of the total number of profiles in OND 2008. Generally, LWP is highest in CloudSat and lowest in SSM/I. The composites show the average over ascending and descending passes for AMSR-E and SSM/I.

This data is experimental and is subject to revision. If you are using this data, please e-mail Michael Brunke <brunke@atmo.arizona.edu> so that you can be updated if a revision of the data is posted.

UPDATE: Version 3 of the CloudSat team LWPs has now been added. Along with LWPs only being considered when a cloud is detected in the CloudSat/CALIPSO cloud base/top product and valid CloudSat LWPs being limited to profiles where cloud top is at or above 1000 m per suggestion by Z. Wang as in Version 2, LWPs are further limited to when the maximum reflectivity below mid-cloud is >= -15 dBZ to limit corruption by precipitation.
