3/20/00 SPRING EQUINOX (aka Vernal Equniox): Today is the first official day of spring, when the length of day and night is (approximately) equal - hence the name equinox. On this date, the sun is directly overhead at the equator. The days will continue to get longer, and the nights shorter, until the summer solstice on June 21.
