Maps for the Weather Forecasting Project for Fall 2019

Click on the thumbnails below to open larger images in another window or tab.

The forecasts are all valid for 00Z on Wednesday, November 13. The ECMWF model forecasts and the GFS model forecasts (all maps except the last row) are used in part 2 of the project report. The verification maps (last row of the table) are used in part 3 of the project. The difference in each row is the length of the forecast time between the model initialization time and the valid time for the forecast. The last row contains the actual (or true) 500 mb height pattern for 00Z on Wednesday, November 13, so it is not actually a forecast, but the 500 mb height pattern based on measurements. A perfect forecast in any of the rows with forecast maps would exactly match the map in the last row, which is sometimes called the forecast verification map.
