Computational Methods in Atmospheric Sciences

Fall 2000

 

Goals:

To introduce the computational methods used in solving problems in the atmospheric sciences with a focus on numerical schemes widely used in numerical weather prediction and climate models
To briefly introduce statistical analysis of observational data and model output

Prerequisites:

Math 254, ENGR 170, ATMO 300a,b, or consent of the instructor

Required Textbook:

Handbook of Mathematical Formulas and Integrals (Alan Jeffrey, Academic Press, pp. 410)
This is supplemented by classroom handouts

Class Hours:

Tuesdays and Thursdays: 11:00 am - 12:15 pm, PAS 486 (Lectures)
Wednesdays: 400 - 4:50 pm, PAS 588 (Laboratory)

Office Hours:

Available almost any time

Grading Policy:

Homework(25%)
Laboratory projects (25%)
Midterm examination (25%)
Final examination (25%)
Being late will result in 10% reduction of the score for each homework assignment or project,
and the score for missing any examinations will be taken as zero.
