Lightning & Atmospheric Electricity

The Institute of Atmospheric Physics has been a leader in research on lightning and thunderstorm electricity for more than 50 years. Today collaborations with Vaisala Tucson, the owner and operator of the U.S. National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN), enhance our cutting-edge research on detecting and locating lightning and in applications of lightning data by electric power utilities and in hydrology. We are also measuring the optical power and energy radiated by both natural and rocket-triggered discharges in an effort to improve our understanding of the energy budget of lightning processes.
